Started in 2025, E/X is an arts journal founded by, written by, and concerning women and their art.
Who are we?
Women-identifying artists, writers, and thinkers.
What does our journal consist of?
Art by women, art-criticism by women, a female-centered discourse on aesthetics and culture—defined, observed, and felt by women. We welcome essays of any form, art of any form, theory, critical reviews (visual art, literature, music, the performing arts etc.), and interviews.
Why does this journal exist?
Because it’s still deeply confusing to navigate the art world and aesthetic politics as a woman. Technological development, mass media, and historical regressions/repetitions have contributed to more nuanced definitions of what it means to be a woman today and it is the goal of this publication to explore those. We still believe that it can be radical for a collective of female artists to insert themselves thoughtfully into these modern discourses in a way that constructively disrupts them. WHAT IS A WOMEN’S MOVEMENT? WHAT IS RADICAL COHESION? The purpose of this publication is to get closer to these answers by producing even more questions.
Why a journal and not a magazine?
It is both a reclamation and reinterpretation of a mode of publication and dissemination of ideas that has been historically restricted for certain groups of people. We are rigorous and analytic, but also not restrictive in the way that sometimes an academic journal can be.
What are we looking for?
Women-identifying artists, writers, and expressers. We are looking for EX-pression not confession.
And our content is…
MULTI-GENERATIONAL. This means we welcome cross-generational engagement between female artists. Pitch us interviews with artists of all generations, sit down with someone older or younger than you. We are contemporary in the sense that we are inherently tied to what came before us and what will inevitably come after us.
